KUBUŚ I JEGO PAN. HOŁD W TRZECH AKTACH DLA DENISA DIDEROTA
JACQUES AND HIS MASTER. HOMAGE TO DENIS DIDEROT
by Milan Kundera
translation – Marek Bieńczyk
Jacques and His Master, according to the full title is a specific homage to Diderot and his philosophical novel Jacques the Fatalist and His Master. There are three intermingling stories in Kundera’s novel: of the Master, of Jacques, and of Madame de la Pommeraye, the innkeeper and the owner of “majestic” buttocks – a pretext to talk about philosophy, male/female relationships and numerous obscenities. Perhaps in relation to the ubiquitous coarseness I take a great pleasure in rediscovering the protagonist each time I stand in front of Szczecin’s audience.
