LIPIEC / JULY
by Ivan Vyrypaev
translation – Agnieszka Lubomira Piotrowska
“July” is a dramatic piece in which the actress Karolina Gruszka, the protagonist of the Vyrypaev’s film “Oxygen,” confronts a terrifying yet at the same time poetic and metaphorical text. The line between cruelty and beauty is almost invisible.
Ivan Vyrypaev, the author and director, wants to show the spectators the light shining even from most tragic stories. Following the Orthodox philosophy, especially the thought of Father Pavel Florensky, the author of famous book “Iconostasis,” executed by the NKVD, Vyrypaev leads the character of his drama to find the house of God “not behind a beautiful meadow but behind a black forest.” The protagonist of “July” is like a lost soul finding itself and discovering in itself more than itself. It flies up from hell into the angelic domain. It is meaningful that Vyrypaev began writing the text just after completing his works on the film “Euphoria.”
