The Song of the Goat Theatre, Wroclaw

MACBETH

“Macbeth” is the fruit of collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company. The performance explores the musicality of Shakespeare’s poetry and seeks the roots of tragedy. Searching for the colors and sounds of Shakespearean language, the actors investigate the very nature of the drama. The performance continues the ensemble’s deep interest in tragedy (the company’s name comes the Greek tragon ode – meaning song of the goat), and opens up new spaces for artistic exploration. The first work-in-progress of “Macbeth: was shown in February 2007 at the Swan Theatre (Royal Shakespeare Company) in Stratford-upon-Avon during the Complete Works festival. The cast of the performance is international, including actirs from England, Finland, Scotland, Wales and Poland.

***

The actors of Song of the Goat Theatre wonderfully combined three seemingly divergent elements – kinghts’ legends of Albion, transformed by Shakespeare; religious songs of hard mountain men, and costumes suggestively referring to samurai figures known from woodcuts – into one, extraordinarily intense performance. It is not only about convincing presentation of the text, fantastic choreography and unusual sonic aspect of the performance . . . It is about the unique concentration. Bral builds the rhythmic unity, the whirling and vibrating chorea; its construction is determined by music, singing, movement, and English-spoken story of Macbeth, a knight pushed to power by pride and madness of his wife as well as his own sick imagination.
